They even share a food dish at times! This shocked me because my dog Sophie is very protective of her food, so she must really love her kitty to share her food with him!

They were the best of friends. They were the worst of friends.

Dogs and cats have long been known as enemies. Dogs chase cats. Cats run from dogs. They fight like cats and dogs! Dogs by nature are predators, and often chase things that are smaller than they are.

There are "dog" people. There are "cat" people. Dogs and cats have historically been pitted against each other, labeled as enemies. This is not always the case. It is possible for dogs and cats, the most common household pets, to not only exist in harmony, but to develop a unique, loving relationship.

We adopted a 6-month old cat from the Humane Society a few years ago. We already had at home a 6-month old miniature dachshund. When the lady at the Humane Society heard about my wiener dog at home, she almost didn't let me adopt the cat! She said that she has known dachshunds to be "cat-killers" and that if I did take the cat home that I should always keep the cat in a separate room from the dog. I knew this would never happen, afterall I was getting the cat so my dog would have a playmate! She lectured me over and over to not introduce them for at least 3 days, and to let them get used to the other one's smell before they meet face to face.

When I walked in my house with the cat in a pet carrier box I planned to get Sophie, my dog, and put her in another room while letting the cat roam his new surroundings. Well, this didn't exactly go as planned. Sophie ran up to greet me, smelled the cat in the box and went crazy! She started barking and whining and jumping at the cat carrier aggressively. Meanwhile the cat was going crazy in the box, throwing a fit, and I lost control of the box and out the cat jumped! The animals then proceeded to chase each other all over our house for about 15 minutes without me being able to catch either one! It was like living in a zoo....which foreshadowed my future with these two animals.

I gave up trying to chase them, and so much for my 3-day plan of introducing them to each other. Their relationship was off to a hectic start and there was nothing I could do about it. I left the room, exhausted from chasing them, and came back a few minutes later.....only to find them cuddled up on the couch together, with Sophie giving the kitty a bath! It was the most precious thing I have ever seen, and I quickly snapped a photo. I was amazed, it was like these two were meant to be partners in life, partners in crime, and BFF's (Best Friends Forever).

Over the next two years I was lucky enough to witness this realtionship of true friendship and companionship develop into something I never imagined. I have taken so many videos and pictures of these two, and in fact they have become You Tube Phenomenons, you can see all the videos I've posted of them here: http://www.youtube.com/my_videos Or you can go to the bottom of this page to view the attached links to their hilarious and adorable videos.

These two sure put on a show! One minute they are wrestling and tackling each other, and the next minute they are cuddled up taking a nap together, bathing each other. They are an endless source of entertainment, and I am so lucky to get to witness this relationship every day!

They watch out for each other, they have each other's backs. Where one goes, the other follows. These two have changed the reputed relationships of dogs and cats forever. The truly broke the mold.

it means that the HubPages team have scoured the "newbies" such as yourself and have come up with 10 of the best to put forward for all hubbers to vote on! Since they generally have thousands to go through, that's quite a feat. So give yourself a good pat on the back for a job well done! Just getting nominated is big

Great hub! I saw that first picture and laughed out loud. Dogs and cats can make great playmates. I have a dog and two cats in my house now, and I know just what you mean about the zoo! I've been blessed to witness come great dog/cat friendships in my life too.

What a great story! I'm so glad this worked out for you and those two! Companions! there's nothing better. We have many indoor cats and a dog, Lady. They all do so well together even after each having come from a different situation; different 'walk of life,' different areas. You have proven to the non believers, that this is, indeed possible. Thank you for a really great hub...fun to read and heartwarming, too. Love the pics and looking forward to taking the time to see the videos. Voted UP, AWESOME & Beautiful, of course!!
